The drive that has failed the DST short test is a drive that you should consider running chkdsk /x /f /r On this drive that failed the short generic test I ran chkdsk /x /f /r so that any bad part of the drive are no longer being used. So I am able to get some use out of this drive with the knowledge that it could fail No important files are being saved on this drive which has failed the drive tests. The computer I use predominantly to play DVD's using HDMI on a television. The long generic fails immediately as the short generic has already failed. It fails the Sea tools short generic test. One of my old drives passes all SMART tests. HGST support have closed my case since they I take it you still think the hard drive itself is the most likely culprit? I assumed from the fact that changing the drive letter fixed the problem (temporarily) that the problem must be with Windows. I did another CrystalDiskMark test and the results are somewhere between when the before and after results from my first post but nearer the faster results so a big improvement but something is still clearly not right. Videos on other hard drives play fine in all media players. Player (Films and TV I think it's called). I now find that the same video files play fine in VLC player or Kodi but stutter constantly in Windows built in media I had been trying to play video files in order to check if the problem was fixed. I'm more confused now by yesterday's results. I put the disk in a different PC andĮventually I tried simply changing the drive letter assigned in Windows and it fixed the issue immediately and was still working after a reboot. Several disk utilities from various manufacturers also found no problem with the disk. I went through all the normal troubleshooting for the drive chkdsk took about 5 days to complete and found no errors. Sometimes rebooting the PC would temporarily It could not play videos and even opening a folder with a few items in took 10-20 seconds. I've been having trouble with a new 4TB HDD since it was installed. ![]()
